The United States equestrian federation announced the team that will represent the U.S.A. in the Nations Cup leg at the most prestigious dressage show of the year, the 2019 CDIO Aachen.

The team selection came as a surprise as America's two strongest combinations, Laura Graves on Verdades and Kasey Perry-Glass on Gorklintgaards Dublet, both decided to stay home for the summer, whereas the other U.S. A-team combinations are all in Europe competing on a summer tour.

"Verdades and Dublet are both at home this summer," U.S. managing director dressage Hallye Griffin told Eurodressage. "The horses and athletes are fit and healthy and after having a great showing in Gothenburg earlier this year, we didn’t feel the need to put extra miles on their legs this summer. Next year (with the 2020 Olympics) will be a lot of travel and we want them ready for peak performance then."

The American Aachen team includes:

  • Katherine Bateson-Chandler (Wellington, Fla.) and Alcazar, Jane Clark’s 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding
  • Shelly Francis (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and Danilo, Patricia Stempel’s 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding
  • Adrienne Lyle (Wellington, Fla.) and Salvino, Betsy Juliano LLC’s 12-year-old Hanoverian stallion
  • Steffen Peters (San Diego, Calif.) and Suppenkasper, Four Winds Farm and Akiko Yamazaki’s 11-year-old KWPN gelding

Adrienne Lyle will also show the 11-year old American bred KWPN gelding Harmony’s Duval (by Rousseau) in the CDI 4* tour.
