The Westfalian licensed stallion Birmingham has passed away. He was 6 year old and struck unexpectedly from kidney failure.

Birmingham was born in 2014 and bred by Frank Dahlhoff. He was by Bretton Woods out of Fleet-Street (by Furst Piccolo x Sandro Hit x Contender).

He was the third ranked stallion in the premium ring at the 2016 Westfalian Stallion Licensing in Munster-Handorf and sold via the auction for  260,000 euro to the State Stud in Celle.

He did his 14-day stallion suitability test in Neustadt/Dosse in April 2017 and scored 7.83 for dressage and 6.58 for show jumping, finishing on the minimum allowed criterium of 7.50 to pass the test. In the Stalllion Sport Test in Munster-Handorf in February 2018 he did better and scored 8.34 in dressage. In the sport test in February 2019 his score dropped back to 7.60 for dressage.

Under Janina Tietze, Birmingham was first competed in June 2018 and went on to win bronze at the 2018 Westfalian Young Horse Championships, but did not go to Warendorf for the Bundeschampionate. In 2019 he qualified and made it to the Bundeschampionte, where he was 8th in the Finals for 5-year olds.  In 2020 Birmingham had done two M-level classes in June in Verden, winning both.

Birmingham's career as a breeding stallion had only just started and in 2020 he is supposed to present his first sons at the licensing. In 2018 he sired Bea Birmingham, the price highlight of the Hanoverian Elite Foal auction which sold for 28,000 euro.

A few days ago, Birmingham became ill and was transported to the Equine Clinic in Hanover. Unfortunately he could not be saved.

"It is never a right time to let a horse go, but this stallion really still had his life ahead of him," Celle communicated. "Everything went so fast in the past few days, that we are still a bit dizzy of it today. Because of a sudden kidney problem we brought him to Hanoverian, where everyone fought for his life, but the kidney failure could not be turned around. He always gave everything for his rider, was a true gift with his character and super healthy only a few days ago."
