Osbaldo Romero celebrating success as a breeder and PRE horse owner

City of Industry I (Feria del Caballo Español), taking place from May 2 to May 5, will kick off the 2025 ANCCE competition season on American soil. Several USPRE-member breeders will participate, including Osbaldo Romero of Yeguada de los Romero, who will showcase his full lineup of competition horses.

Osbaldo Romero, the driving force behind Yeguada de los Romero, is a passionate advocate for the Pura Raza Española (P.R.E.) horse. His journey into the world of P.R.E. breeding is truly inspiring. In this interview, we explore the story of Yeguada de los Romero—from its beginnings in 2011, born from a lifelong love of horses, to its dedication to the prestigious Torreluna bloodline. We also discuss their upcoming participation in City of Industry, their meticulous training and preparation, their dedicated team, and their vision for the future of the P.R.E. breed in the United States.

Join us as we dive into the dedication, expertise, and vision behind one of the most passionate P.R.E. breeding programs in the country.

How did you get started in the horse world, and specifically with the P.R.E.?
I started in 2011. Since childhood, I have always had a passion for horses. Unfortunately, the passing of both my mother and father—just two weeks apart—pushed me to follow my dream. Their loss made me realize that life is too short, and we never know what tomorrow may bring. So, I decided to go after my dream. I started looking for a ranch, visiting horses, and never imagined I would become so deeply involved in this world.

When did you establish Yeguada de los Romero, and what inspired you to create it?
The dream of owning horses began in 2011, and as I mentioned earlier, it was my passion and personal journey that inspired me.

How many horses do you currently have at Yeguada de los Romero?
At the moment, we have approximately 35 horses, including stallions, competition mares, breeding mares, colts, and fillies.

What are the main bloodlines or characteristics you focus on in your breeding program?
We are deeply passionate about the Torreluna bloodline. Our focus has been on importing the best horses from Yeguada Torreluna to maintain and enhance quality.

What makes the P.R.E. unique compared to other breeds?
Their beauty, elegance, movement, and character set them apart.

What are your expectations for your participation in City of Industry this May?
We hope to compete on equal footing with the largest breeders in the U.S. and showcase the quality of our horses.

How are you preparing your horses for this competition? What aspects of training are you focusing on?
We have assembled an exceptional team, including top dressage riders, an expert presenter from Spain, and veterinarians from Spain to ensure our horses are in peak condition. Our preparation includes:

Proper nutrition and care, hoof care (a critical aspect), rigorous exercise and training and continuous learning and improvement

Which horses are you planning to present, and what are your goals for them at this event?
We will present several homebred colts from Yeguada Torreluna bloodlines in the U.S. These include:

Gatunera de Torreluna
How do you see the growth of the P.R.E. breed in the United States? Is demand increasing?
Yes, demand is increasing. However, education about the breed in the U.S. market is still lacking. Many buyers do not understand the difference between high-quality and lower-quality horses, and they often expect the same price for both. In Spain, breeders and buyers understand quality, but the U.S. still has much to learn.

What advice would you give to someone in the U.S. looking to invest in a high-quality P.R.E.?
Invest in quality, not quantity. If we focus solely on numbers, we risk lowering the overall standard of P.R.E. horses in the U.S. It is crucial to prioritize excellence to maintain and elevate the breed’s reputation.
