Amanda Barnestam Olsson and the 16-year old Swedish bred pony Jarno became the winners of the 2017 Swedish Pony Championships held in Hammarö, Sweden, on 17 - 19 June. The Swedis pony riders had their own private national Championships, instead of joining the other FEI level categories at the Nationals which took place in Stromsholm on 3 - 6 June 2017.

A large group of 40 FEI level pony riders gathered in Hammaro for three rounds of competition: the team championship test and individual test for all and the top 15 moved on to the Kur to Music on Monday 19 June 2017.

Amanda Barnestam Olsson rode Karin levin Angergard's stallion Jarno (by Coelenhage's Purioso x Coelenhage's Let's Be the Best) to the overall victory with 211.7 points. The pair took a decent start with a third place in the team test (68.3%) and then won the individual test (71.5%) and the Kur to Music (71.8%).

The 15-year old Barnestam Olsson is only in her first year competing internationally at FEI pony level and on a national level she bagged the first FEI level title in her career.

"Jarno was amazing the whole weekend and was really Nice to ride," Amanda told Eurodressage. Barnestam is trained by Cecilia Kristofferssen and gets helped by her sister Zanna as well. Her future plans include the 2017 Nordic Baltic Championships in Hammaro next weekend and the CDI-W Stockholm in the autumn. Surprisingly, the Swedish selectors decided not pick the pair for the 2017 European Pony Championships at the end of July. "We have no Idea why, but everyone was really suprised. We are really sorry," Amanda admitted.

My Sandgren and the 17-year old Swedish bred gelding Lykkes Chester (by Contus x Courage) earned silver with a total of 210.9 points. They were second in the team test with 70.7%, second in the individual (69.7%) and second in the freestyle (70.6%). The 13-year old Sandgren is also a newbie at international pony level, having made her CDI Debut in Kristiansand in May.

Wynja Eriksdotter Rubin and the 12-year old German Riding pony stallion Wacos Rache MW (by Waco x Valentino) got the bronze with 210.1 points. The pair won the team test with 71.2% and finished third in the individual (69.6%) and kur (69.3%). The 13-year old Wynja is the third Swedish new comer to international pony competition this year, proving that young blood is plentiful in Sweden.

The Swedish Pony Championships hosted more classes for ponies of all sizes and competition levels. Emma Tendenstrom and the 10-year old Giacomo (by Green River xx x Power Boy) won group 2 of Category D. Elen Osson and the 15-year old Arts Daylight (by Dijon S x Till the Champ) won group 1 of category C, while Linda Svensson Krupke and the 16-year old Merveilleux (by Sweet Demand xx x Pernod ox) got the gold in group 2 of category C. Tindra Holmertz and the 13-year old Monty (by Vermont x Carneval II) won gold in the B-category.
