Danish Warmblood Breeding News

Each year in September the best mares and foals qualified at the regional shows gather at the annual Elite Mare and Foal Show at the head quarters of the Danish Warmblood society in Vilhelmsborg, Denmark.

The 2012 Danish Warmblood Elite Show features the national final for Danish Warmblood registered foals, 2-year-old fillies and newly graded performance-tested mares, as well as the Youngster Cup for 5- and 6-year-old dressage and jumping horses.

Foals and fillies

The 43 foals are divided into four categories of dressage fillies/colts and jumping fillies/colts, and 2-3 from each category are selected for the champion's ring. In the category of dressage fillies the dam line of Mistral Højris is represented by two regional champion foals out of full sisters by Blue Hors Romanov. One of these fine filly foals is also selected for the Elite Foal Auction.

The group of 2-year-old fillies consists of 18 dressage and 10 jumper fillies. Like the foals these young mares have all been selected at regional shows to compete at the national final at Vilhelmsborg where two champions will be proclaimed – a dressage champion and a jumper champion. One of the competitors this year is former Danish Dressage Filly Champion Stigma, which was sold at the Elite Foal Auction the same year.

A New Generation of Gold Medal Mares

The newly graded and performance tested mares, mainly aged 3 years, will be the main focus at the Elite Show. They represent the future of Danish Warmblood breeding and sport. At Vilhelmsborg they will be shown according to their breeding, either under saddle or in free jumping. One of the newly graded mares Lærkegårdens IQ already took the champion title in 2009 as the Jumper Filly Foal of the Year.

These 66 newly graded mares will be competing for breeders’ medals in bronze or silver, and a few of them will be picked for the “gold ring”. Among these few supreme gold medal mares the judges will pick the champion mare for dressage and jumping. In previous years the gold ring included now Grand Prix mares  Donna Silver, Polka Hit Nexen and Prix St Georges' horse UNO Donna Unique.

Elite Foal Auction

The collection consists of 43 thoroughly selected foals with highly interesting bloodlines. Most of them have been in the final at a regional foal show. In addition to a beautiful type and conformation these foals all have strong performance bloodlines and many of them represent the most successful Danish Warmblood breeders and the strongest dam lines.

The Danish Warmblood Elite Foal Auction is a proven success and many of the foals sold at the auction have developed into international sport and breeding horses. The most expensive foal to date is Tailormade Attention, a licensed premium stallion who has his first crop on the ground this year and is represented at the Elite Foal Auction by an outstanding filly foal out of his own dam line.
