The English thoroughbred sire Julio Mariner xx (by Blakeney xx x Worden xx x Le Sage) has passed away at his home "De Watermolen" in Haaksbergen, The Netherlands, on Wednesday May 26, 2004. He was 29 years old.

"He was having problems with his hind legs for a couple of weeks," owned Jan Greve said, "but on Wednesday he could no longer get u,p so we decided to put him down. It was a very sad moment for us."

Julio Mariner xx was a winning race horse in his early days. As a two-year old he won the Leyburn Stakes, and as a three-year old he was victorious in Newbury and in the St Leger in Doncaster.

Julio Mariner xx had no success as a breeding stallion in the race world. It wasn't until he was imported into the Netherlands in 1988 that he became a respected sire. He got approved for the KWPN verband and was praised by breeders for his eagerness and excellent jumping techniques.

Julio Mariner xx sired one licensed son, Pythagoras, who unfortunately died of colic as a 4-year old. Renowned offspring by him are Resolute, Marinero, Dinky Toy, Sir Galahad and grandsons Riant and Lester.
