The British Hanoverian Horse Society (BHHS) concluded its series of events for this year in the last week of October, with their Annual Stallion Licensing in partnership with the British Warmblood Breeders Studbook at Moreton Morrell in Warwickshire. The event took place on 26 October 2022.

The BHHS Committee were joined by Dr Ludwig Christmann of the Hannoveraner Verband and Chairman of the BHHS and International Judge Katy Holder-Vale.

The Champion Stallion, for both the BHHS and BWS, was awarded to Sean White’s Hanoverian Ducati who is by Desperados out of a dam by Sir Donnerhall, bred by Johann-Hinrich Koj from Vorwerk, Germany. The colt was an elegant, beautiful, modern type with a very elastic trot and canter. He was also supple and intelligent over the jumps.

Dr Christmann commented that “he stood out as the winning stallion of the entire licensing. The stallion ideally combines the advantages of both parents: Really good type and movement, long legged and compact with a strong back, in addition very athletic and with a lot of energy that can be regulated very well”.

Ducati was purchased as a foal in Germany by Denise Mitchell of Gamblethorpe Stud and is now owned by Sean White. Sean said “Ducati is an absolute joy to work with at home and is a kind horse with a wonderful work ethic. I am delighted to be able to offer him to British Breeders from 2023 and look forward to seeing his first crop of foals”.

Wild Romantic
The Reserve Champion was Wild Romantic, bred and owned by Lynne Crowden of Woodlander Stud, who is a son of Wild Child and the Han.Pr.St For your Love by For Compliment. He has Hanoverian parents but has an Oldenburg passport. The judges commented “he is a very likeable, medium sized and correct stallion, who convinced with his very good trot and walk. Equipped with the chestnut colour he is a typical hopeful from the paternal line of the legendary Weltmeyer”. Wild Romantic is the full brother to the licensed and performance tested stallion Wild Love also bred by Lynne Crowden of Woodlander Stud.

The other stallions licensed on the day by the British Warmblood Society were Queqrido and Officier.

The show jumping bred Queqrido, a grey six year old by Clinton (Heartbreaker x Landadel), with a great jumping pedigree and who showed typical style over the jumps. He was bred by Dries Lammens / Mts Team Nijhof Belgium and owned and presented by owners Grace Collister and Ryan Hall.

The three year old Officier by Imposantos x Zizi top x  Jazz, was very elegant well developed colt had powerful elastic trot and canter. Bred by M.Kool- Van Woudenbergh in the Netherlands and owned by Ruth Hole.

As well as the stallion licensing, the BHHS also offer their members a yearling colt assessment class. The purpose of this evaluation is so that the judges can give the owners feedback on the yearlings prospects as a future stallion. It is important feedback for owners who are interested in licensing and know the commitment, time and resource required in preparing any horse for this process.

Voce Viva RL (by Viva Gold x Royal Rubin x Walsee) was presented to the judges for the yearling assessment. The judges commented that he had correct conformation and three correct strong paces. Voce Viva RL is bred and owned by Lucinda Bellis and Rob Gilsenan of RL Dressage. The judges advised that he is a good prospect to grow on as a stallion.

Lucinda of RL Dressage said “it’s such an invaluable opportunity from the BHHS to be able to take yearlings to be assessed. Voce Viva RL was a very high scoring premium foal, and we were advised to keep him entire, so it was great to see that he’s still showing good potential for this route at this state in his development. It’s our dream to breed a licensed stallion so we are one step closer!”

Katy Holder-Vale concluded that “the standard of the stallions was extremely high with fashionable pedigrees and great preparation clearly having been undertaken prior to the event. In all a great day and showed off all the colts presented to their maximum potential”.

Both judges believe that a huge thank you must go to Carsten Sandrock in particular, as he prepared and presented three of the stallions for their very happy owners in a most excellent way.
