The Westfalian breeding society has much to celebrate as a sensational price record of 250,000 euro was set at its 2025 Westfalian Elite Foal Auction in Munster on 2 August 2025.

With 16 foals selling over 20,000 euro the breeding society reported that it "impressively demonstrated this weekend that it is still possible to sell foals successfully this year!" as mentioned in its press release.

Foal auctions across Germany and The Netherlands have been been struggling to get good prices for their foals with a few exceptions and price highlights. Most breeders end up either stuck with an unsold foal or having to let it go in the 4,000 - 6,000 euro price range, and it was no different in this auction, although many foals did sell for great, motivating prices.

One Client Makes the Magic

For Westfalia, it turns out that one client is responsible for this "sensational" overall result: Portuguese horse investor Thiago Mantovani.

Vivaldo Gold
Mantovani decided to purchase no less than 10 (!) foals in this auction, including the two price highlights. He bought two colts and eight fillies in total. Mantovani closely collaborates with trainer and Westfalian horse breeder Norbert van Laak.

Thiago's record breaking purchase is Frank Dahlhoff's filly Viva Love (by Viva Gold x Fürstenball) for 250,000 € followed by  Philipp Welsing's colt Vivaldo Gold (by Valdiviani x Belissimo M) for 100,000 €

Statistically

Viorenta
The online auction page lists that 107 dressage bred foals were on offer, which includes 7 pony foals. The price statistics say that 76 horse foals and 7 pony foals sold.

The average price for a horse foal was 16,875 euro, which is an impressive result.

However, looking at the group of foals selling (or not-selling) between 4,000 and 6,000 euro, of the 83 on offer 42 of them sold for 6,000 euro or less, which is 50% of the collection.
