The 4-year old McMary, the 5-year old Perfect Ritme, and the 6-year old Extreme U.S. became the winners of the 2025 Pavo Cup Finals in Ermelo, The Netherlands, on 31 July - 2 August 2025.
The Format
The Pavo Cup Finals consist of a semi-final round, which was held on 31July 2025. Fifty-seven four-year olds, 40 five-year olds, and 24 six-year olds competed in the semi-finals following qualifiers all across The Netherlands in the spring.
Twenty 4 and 5-year olds and ten 6-year olds moved onto round 1 of the Finals on Saturday. The top three moved onto the final finals which consisted of two rounds: another round under saddle, presented by the own rider in front of judges, followed by a test ride by a guest judge rider. This year. Simone Pearce (AUS) was invited for the job.
The Pavo cup finals is open to KWPN bred and registered horses as well as for foreign bred KWPN licensed stallions.
4-YO: McMary
British Phoebe Peters and Eugene Reesink's he 4-year old mare McMary continued to ride on the wave of success after the bay mare became the talk of the town in an offspring presentation at 2025 KWPN Stallion Licensing. Bred by Dennis Schurink and Jeroen Slot, McMary was unbeatable in the 4-year old division, winning all three rounds. They posted 91.4 in the semi-finals, 92 in the first round of the finals and got a 10 for rideability and quality from guest judge rider Simone Pearce.
"Wow, a fantastic horse," praised Simone. "If this isn't a future Grand Prix horse, then there aren't any Grand Prix horses in the Netherlands. She's incredibly attentive, focused, and gives a fantastic feeling." Phoebe Peters is thrilled with her second Pavo Cup victory. "Speechless," she said. "She's the most fantastic horse I've ever ridden, both in talent and temperament. She loves to compete, and it's an honour to ride her."
The differences between the second and third place finishers were small. The reserve champion's title was for the KWPN bred and NRPS licensed Final Dream (by Fontaine x Johnson), bred by A. Flierman and owned by the rider in partnership with P. Jansen. Under Diederik van Silfhout the stallion scored 86.2 in the semi-finals, 85.2 in the first round of the finals and he got 8.5 from Pearce. "This horse gives me a really good feeling," said Simone. "He could use some strength, but that's fitting for a four-year-old horse of this size. The canter is very nice, he goes uphill easily, and he also feels very honest."
Charlotte Fry and Van Olst's Real Dream (by Dynamic Dream x Negro) landed third place with 84.8 in the semi-finals, 86.0 in the finals and 8.5 from Pearce. He is bred by HA van Triest and Pleyter. "A very nice horse with good use of his hind legs; the canter, in particular, gives a very good feeling," said Pearce. "He feels a little tired now, but that's understandable for a four-year-old horse competing for the second time today. Because of that, he could have shown a bit more impulsion today."
5-YO: Perfect Ritme
"I think this horse is absolutely fantastic," said Pearce. "Kim has done a great job in training; he's very relaxed, but also has a lot of power. He could open up a little more in walk, but otherwise, he's a super horse with a lot of potential."
The reserve champion's spot went to Charlotte Fry aboard Gert Jan van Olst's Pjethro (by Kjento x Desperado). Bred by A. Beerens, the licensed stallion scored 84.2 in the semi-finals, 92.4 in the first round of the finals and he got 8.5 from Pearce. "A super nice horse that really gives the feeling that he's going to be a Grand Prix horse in trot. He was very obedient and focused, in line with what you would expect from a young stallion in this environment. He was still a bit tense in walk, which was the only thing I would like to improve."
Dinja van Liere's assistant rider Kim Alting piloted Eugene Reesink's German licensed and Dutch bred Fiji (by For Romance x Charmeur) to a third place. The pair scored 85.8 in the semi-finals, 86.6 in the first round of the final and he got 7.5 from Pearce. Fiji is mainly standing at stud in Germany and is now following the KWPN licensing process through the Pavo Cup. "I find it difficult to judge this horse today. The walk and canter were very nice, but I would have liked to feel more power from the hind leg in the trot. I think he's a super nice horse, and that was because he was a bit tired today, but I have to take that into account," said Pearce.
6-YO: Extreme U.S.
In the 6-year old division the title went to the German bred and KWPN licensed Extreme U.S. (by Escamillo x Vivaldi), bred by Paul Schockemohle and owned by the breeder in partnership with Joop van Uytert. Under Renate van Vliet-van Uytert, the highly popular breeding stallion won the semi-finals with 88.8 but dropped down the ranking in the first final with 81.40. He made a big recovery thanks to a whopping score by guest rider Simone Pearce. In the second round of the final Extreme U.S got a 9.5 rideability and quality score from Pearce. He totalled a winning 265.2 points for the title, his second after winning it in 2023 as a 4-year old. Last year he placed fifth.
The reserve Champion's title went to Odi Murona (by Blue Hors Farrell x Johnson). Bred by Jo van den Broek and ridden by Tessa Kole the pair scored 87.2 in the semi-finals, won the first round of the finals with 90.20 and then got 80 from Pearce. "A beautiful type with three very good gaits," explained Simone. "She has a bright future ahead of her, but she still felt a bit green to me."
The bronze went to Kim Alting aboard Ozzy TN (by Ibiza x For Romance), bred in Germany by C. Ortmann Ellerbrock and owned by Eugene Reesink. This horse scored 84.4 in the semi-finals, 82.6 in the first round of the finals and got 8.5 from Pearce.
