Renowned German auctioneer and show organizer Rainer Kiel has passed away on 17 April 2022 after a long period of illness. He was 79 years old.

Züchterforum reported the passing of this well known figure in the German breeding and show scene.

Kiel's name was closely connected to the Hanoverian breed society and life in Verden. He stamped the horse scene from the 1980s through the 2000s with his direction and input.

Kiel was auction director, auctioneer and head of sales for the Hanoverian society in Verden as of 1984, succeeding Hans Joachim Köhler. He produced tremendous success for the society through the auctions and was highly liked as a diplomatic negotiator in horse sales. He was employed by the Hanoverian society until 2008. He was succeeded by Dr. Günter Friemel.

Rainer also headed the organisation of the dressage show jumping competitions in Verden since 1983 and directed the first World Championships for young dressage horses there (1997, 2001 and onwards). Verden was also host to the 1997 and 2001 European Dressage Championships as well as the German Dressage Chamionships.

In 2015, at age 72, Kiel announced his retirement from all functions, but he still remained involved as chair of the board of the German Horse Museum in Verden.
