Joop Rodenburg became the first recipient of the inaugural Jazz Trophy, an award dedicated to the breeder of the KWPN Horse of the Year.

Rodenburg is the breeder of Glamourdale (by Lord Leatherdale x Negro), a KWPN licensed stallion and World Young Horse Champion. The Grand Prix stallion was named the 2020 KWPN Horse of the Year in January.

The Jazz Trophy is a new initiative of the KWPN society to honour the breeders of the Horse of the Year, a title which is decided by popular vote. The breeder of the Horse of the Year is honoured at the annual KWPN Stallion Licensing.

This year the licensing took place behind closed doors due to the corona pandemic and was streamed on the internet. Rodenburg's grand daughter Jasmijn van der Velden went to Ermelo to receive the trophy in Rodenburg's stead.

Jasmijn was 12 when Glamourdale was born. "To me he was as fun and sweet as all the other foals," she said. "My grandfather dreamt of breeding a licensed stallion one day. He never expected it would go like this. We try to follow Glamourdale closely. Last summer we saw him in training and it's nice to see his development."

Based in from Oudekijrk aan de Ijssel, Joop was a passionate breeder, but sadly passed away a few years ago. His daughter Jolanda and grand children Jasmijn and Isabel are now running the breeding programme.

"The trophy will get a nice spot in grandma's home," said Jasmijn.
