Sönke Rothenberger hand-grazing burn victim Luna, fifteen months after a fire wiped out their equestrian yard.

Fifteen months after the inferno that wiped out the equestrian centre, Gestut Erlenhof, of the Rothenberger family, the 7-year old mare Luna has returned home in Bad Homberg, Germany, to a rebuilt stable, almost fully recovered from her injuries.

On 28 February 2019, Sönke and Sanneke Rothenberger were woken up in the middle of the night when they noticed that their barn was on fire. Parents Sven and Gonnelien were with daughter Semmieke at the CDI Lier in Belgium.

Sönke and Semmieke ran into the barn to open the stalls and rescue the horses. While the most important competition horses got saved, five perished in the fire (Fayola, Zum Glück, Kid Gentleman, Paso Doble, and Royal) and a sixth one, Kantate, could not be saved from her injuries even though she spent months in the vet clinic.

One victim of the fire, the now 7-year old German Sport Horse mare Luna (by Lord Leopold x Contendro) overcame her severe injuries and fifteen months after the fire she has returned home to Bad Homberg, to a completely rebuilt horse center.

On Sunday 10 May 2020, Sönke posted on Instagram: "I’m super happy that Luna finally moved back in and is home after the horrible fire! This horse made me dream of Olympics and now I’m just happy she can spend the rest of her life here with her new mate!"
