2016 Swedish Young Horse Championships

The 3-year old Florence VH, the 4-year old Dragon Welt, the 5-year old Macacho, the 6-year old Van Vivaldi and the 7-year old Quarton became the winners of the 2016 Swedish Warmblood Young Horse Championships held at the national state stud in Flyinge, Sweden, on 5 - 9 October 2016. This yea the Swedish Young Horse Nationals have been split up into two Championships. The Breeders Trophy in Flyinge, open only to Swedish warmblood registered horses, and an Open Breed Swedish Nationals taking place in two weeks.

The 3-year old category involves an assessment of the young riding horses of their gaits, dressage potential and conformation. The judges' panel included Mariette Sanders-van Gansewinkel, Johan Ekenberg and Birgitta Larsson. Einar Kristoffersen steered Vastra Hoby stud farm's Swedish mare Florence VH (by Floricello x Rohdiamant) to the title with an 83.40 point score. Sandra Sterntorp and her own Swedish gelding Swedish Diamond (by San Amour x Corland) were a close second with 82.40 while Jonathan Medin and Swedish stallion John Silver (by Johnson x Quite Easy) slotted in third with 81?99 points.

The 4-year old category is always an anticipated one as it features a finals in which a guest judge rider test rides the 10 highest scoring horses of the first round. This year double Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin was invited as guest judge and she was convinced that the winners of the first round, Ida Linn Lundholm and the Hanoverian stallion Dragon Welt (by Dancier x Weltmeyer) was the best horse of the pack. Jan Brink's stallion scored 87.200 points in the first round and scored 100 points with Dujardin to finish on a winning total of 93.60 points. Johan Svensson and Patrik Hannell's Swedish bred Avicci (by Hohenstaufen II x First Wish) was the silver medal winner with 83.40 and 90 points (86.70 total). Maria Eriksson and her own Swedish gelding Mc Gordon (by Connery x Highlander) got the bronze after placing 10th in the first round (78.400) but then receiving the second highest score from Dujardin (92.50) to finish on 85.450 points.

In the 5-year old division judges Mariette Sanders and Bo Ahmann put Ebba von Essen on the Swedish warmblood Macacho (by Maserati x Camara M) in first place in the finals round with 85.40 points. The bay champion is bred and owned by Jeanette Joelsson. Sandra Sterntorp and Emma Karlsson's Swedish bred gelding Simmebros Martell (by Insterburg x First Wish) were the reserve champions with 84.00 points, while Martin Agevall and his own Swedish mare Romeona (by Don Romantic x Briar) slotted in third with 83.00 points.

Caroline Darcourt on Van Vivaldi Caroline Darcourt and the Dutch warmblood stallion Van Vivaldi (by Vivaldi x Olivi) bested the field in the 6-year old division with a score of 86.40 points. They stayed well ahead of runners-up Jan Brink on the Swedish warmblood stallion RayMore (by JJ Rayban x Figaro R) with 83.00 points. Yvonne Osterholm and the Swedish mare Fiera Girl (by Faustinus x Rubinrot) were third with 82.00 points.

Eight combinations contested the 7-year old division and routinier Yvonne Osterholm aced the finals aboard Per-Arne Persson's Swedish gelding Quarton (by Quaterback x Don Schufro) on a score of 73.377 points. Ida Linn Lundholm and Eriksbergs Sateri's Dutch warmblood stallion Eclectisch (by Zenon x Olivi) finished second for silver with 70.614 points, while Stefan Jansson and his own and judge Magnus Ringmark's Swedish stallion Locatelli (by Loredes x Rubinrot) landed the bronze with a 69.167 finals' round.
