The 5-year olds Fortalezza Biolley and Laura Ashley, and the 6-year old Barroso were the winners of the most recent two Belgian selection trials for the 2016 World Young Horse Championships. The WCYH selection season in Belgium kicked off in Diepenbeek and Sint-Truiden and continued the past two weeks with trials in Welkenraedt and Heist op den Berg.
At the small national dressage competition in Welkenraedt on 30 April 2016 the 5-year old division was won by Katrien Verreet on the Oldenburg mare Fortalezza Biolley (by Furst Romancier x Codex) with 74.844 points. Linda Meish and the Dutch warmblood mare Goldennettie (by Jazz x Houston) were the runners-up with 73.865 points. In the 6-year old division Pauluis Larissa and the licensed Dutch bred stallion Barroso (by Bordeaux x Saros) aced the class with 78,542 ahead of Kevin Laevens on the Belgian warmblood licensed stallion Kozinsky van den Dries (by Quaterback x Clavecimbel) with 76.125 points.
At the bigger national show in Heist op den Berg on 7 May 2016, Gert Helsen and Gerlinde Lauwers' Belgian warmblood mare Laura Ashley (by Bon Bravour x Sandro Hit) topped the board in the 5-year old division with 73.167 points, less than 0.400 ahead of junior rider Suraya Hendrikx on the Westfalian gelding Danoon (by Danone I x Dollmann) with 72.833 points. Larissa Pauluis and Barroso once more confirmed their superiority in the 6-year old division with a winning score of 76.458 points. Former Belgian young rider team member Eline Borrey de Coninck was the runner-up aboard Dominique Mohimont's Future's Pride (by Vivaldi x Metall)) with 72.542 points. The Dutch warmblood was previously competed by Anemone Clermont in 2014.
Two more trials will take place before Belgian team selection; one in Schilde (28 May) and one at a location to be determined (10 June). If the latter show does not take place it will be on 19 June 2016 in Overijse. Results achieved at each trial will bring the rider a certain amount of qualification points. The four riders with the highest points (and not percentages) will be nominated for the World Championships.
