One of Germany's great old classical dressage masters, if not the last, has passed away. Dr. Uwe Schulten-Baumer died in the local hospital in his home town Rheinberg in Germany on Tuesday morning 28 October 2014. He was 88 years old.

Originally from Essen-Kettwig, Uwe made a career in the steel and cement business after his formal education and considered horses and dressage "a hobby."

Schulten-Baumer was one of the most successful dressage trainers ever, having led Nicole Uphoff and Isabell Werth to their individual Olympic gold medals. His two children, Uwe junior and Alexa, as well as a stepdaughter Ellen all competed at international Grand Prix level.  Uwe Junior was the world's best dressage rider in the early eighties. At the 1981 European Championship Uwe Jr. finally triumphed over Christine Stuckelberger and Granat who had kept him in silver medal position in the 1978 World Championships. His two best known horses were Slibowitz and Madras.

Uwe Schulten-Baumer had an amazing eye for talented horses and was the discoverer of Germany's best Grand Prix dressage horses to date, Gigolo and Satchmo. In 1986 Isabell Werth came to his yard as an apprentice and he brought her to stardom on a string of horses that were all owned by him (Fabienne, Gigolo, Aleppo, Satchmo, Antony, Apache, Amaretto, Warum Nicht, Laurenti, etc).

Schulten-Baumer was highly decorated for his achievements. In 2005 he received the prestigious German Rider's Cross in Gold after having been bestowed with the Silver Plaque for Exceptional Achievements in the equestrian sport in 1981. In 2009 he received the Honorary Cross from the German Minister of Sport Dr. Ingo Wolf.  In 1992 and 1997 he was proclaimed Trainer of the Year by the International Dressage Trainers' Club (IDTC). In 1999 and 2002 he received the Otto Lorke Prix for having trained the most successful
rising Grand Prix horse of the year.
