The Grand Prix dressage level Trakehner stallion Biotop passed away peacefully on Friday 13 April 2012 at stallion station Rüscher-Konermann in Germany. The bay stallion was 27 years old.

Biotop was in great health till his last day on earth, going out in the paddock and moving regularly in the horse walker.

Last Friday the vet was called as Biotop experienced mild circulatory problems. He as moved a bit in the indoor school and hung on a drip for a while. "Then he lay down, it took two, three minutes and passed away," Annette Rüscher-Konermann told St. Georg.

Biotop was born in 1985 at the Kirow stud in Rostov, Russia. He was sired by Blesk out of Plaska (by Hockey x Paks x Piligrim).

Dr Reiner Klimke discovered the 7-year old Biotop in Belgium and acquired him in 1993. The stallion was licensed for breeding in Germany in 1995.

Biotop was shown by Klimke and became his last competition horse before the riding master's death in 1999. Daughter Ingrid Klimke briefly took over the ride. The horse was successful and did very well on the 1994-1995 World cup circuit.

As a breeding stallion Biotop was first leased to Deckstelle Kappel in Senden and as of 2000 stood at stud at Rüscher-Konermann's. He sired two licensed sons: Goldschmidt and Dios von der Heide.

Biotop was known for his athleticism but also his strong will. Often he would be quirky in the show ring and protest. "A child could handle him here," Rüscher-Konermann commented. "Bio was a very tricky horse and we'll miss him."
