Lima, Peru has been selected as host of the XX Pan American Games in 2027. Lima won the bid over Asuncion.

The 2027 edition of the Pan American Games was originally allocated to Barranquilla, Colombia in August 2021, but the city lost its hosting rights in January 2024 after the country's Ministry of Sports failed to meet contractual obligation, as well as for financial reasons.

The capitals of Paraguay (Asuncion) and Peru (Lima) jumped in as potential substitutes.

The re-allocation was decided at the Pan Am Sports Extraordinary General Assembly in Miami, USA on 12 March 2024.  After the formal presentations and lengthy deliberations, Lima was chosen by secret ballot to host the 2027 Pan Ams. Now Peru must honour the $369 million (€337 million) pledged  to improve the facilities in place since 2019, including expansions.

The most important multi-sport event on the American continent returns to the Peruvian capital which also hosted the Pan Ams in 2019.

Inside the Games posted that the support of the Peruvian President, Dina Boluarte, was crucial, as were the approved economic forecasts. "We have the support of the central government and a guaranteed budget for the organisation of the Lima 2027 Pan American Games because it is in line with the national sports policy," commented Carlos Zegarra, Executive Director of Legacy, marking significant differences with the ousted (due to sanctions) host Barranquilla.
