Dressage rider Juan Matute will receive the "Ambassador of Self-Advancement Award" at the New York Summit gala evening, held for the first time outside New York City.

The 2021 New York Summit will take place in Marbella, Spain, on 19 November 2021.

What is the New York Summit ?

The New York Summit is organized by ICL Foundation (Inspiring Commited Leaders) and describes itself as "the most important Hispanic leadership event in New York City. The NY Summit seeks to celebrate Hispanic leadership in the world, celebrate and make visible how much Latino communities have contributed to the history of this planet, and act as a platform to continue elevating the Hispanic community to access the highest leadership conversations."

Summit spokesperson Valentina Viejo told Eurodressage. "Due to the covid-19 pandemic, which has had a major impact worldwide and strongly in the United States, this year the event has been moved to Spain in order to develop the gala in a safer scenario. For this reason, most of the award winners are Spanish, although Rosario Marín, for example, will also travel from the USA.  This will be the only edition to be held outside NYC and the next one will be at the Radio City music Hall."

The press release stated that he "went from being in a coma due to a stroke to being part of the short list for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics." The release praised the young rider for being "an inspiring example of overcoming adversity. On 5 May 2020, he suffered a stroke, lying in a coma for 25 days where even the doctors believed he would not recover. But Juan's will to live, and the determination of a crack team of surgeons, changed everything. After a successful surgery, and thanks to a pioneering technique developed by Dr. Claudio Rodríguez, he not only survived, but within 3 months, he was back on the horse, as they say, in the process of making the short list for the Tokyo Olympics and the 2021 European Championship. Currently, he is riding at the highest level of international competition, matching his personal best made prior to the accident."

He will be recognized in the fifth edition of the New York Summit, in the Inspiration in Sports Awards category, in which the Paralympic tennis player Cisco García will be awarded the 2021 Resilience Award.
