Thirty stallions have been Registered, Licensed or Approved by the AES Studbook following the 2015 AES Main Stallion Licensing in Schijndel, The Netherlands, on Monday 13 April 2015. The show jumper Diago Maradonna was named licensing champion.
The athletic chestnut Diego Maradonna Z (by Der Senaat x Action Breaker) was presented by De Roshoeve, but owned by the breeders Harrie Theeuwes and Peter Van Santvoort. Another show jumper was named reserve champion: the Belgian warmblood bred Mosito vh Hellehof (by Elvis ter Putte x Nabab de Rêve), owned by Joris De Brabander.
Six dressage stallions were presented at the 2015 AES Stallion Licensing and two were approved: Giano (by Lord of Loxley x Sandro Hit), owned Björn van Kessel and De Ijzeren Man, and Fribourg W (by Lord of Loxley x Ferro), owned by Johan Lokhorst.
The licensed dressage stallions were Berreaux (by Bordeaux x Ferro) owned by W-Stables from Wuustwezel and Sacandro (by Sarkozy x Fürst Heinrich) owned by De Dinkel Hoeve.
Two pony stallions were Licensed: Quidam’s Drum vh Juxschot (by Eternity vd N. Ranch x Kantje’s Armando) and Merlijn vd Bisschop (by Flipper d’Elle x Nabab de Rêve).
To become a graded stallion with the AES the stallion must undergo a 5 stage vetting and show talent for either dressage or showjumping at the initial stallion grading show, after which they will have to prove themselves in the sport during competitions. The selection is continuous and tough: stallions can be down-graded as well as being up-graded.
The AES studbook makes a distinction between registered, licensed and approved. "Registered" is the basic level of grading and registered stallions can cover up to 10 of their owner's mares per annum. "Licensed" stallions should be competing in age classes and can cover up to 30 mares per annum. "Approved" is the maximum level of grading and usually applies to stallions competing or that have competed at an International level. They need to have proven offspring. Approved stallions can cover an unlimited number of mares.
