Austrian Children/Junior Team Horse Sanibel Retired from Sport

Sanibel, Austria's 8-time European Championship children and junior riders' horse, has been retired from sport. 

Sanibel is a 19-year old Hanoverian mare by Samarant out of Daiquiri K (by Donnerhall x Weltmeyer x Grenadier). She is bred by Wilhelm Klausing. 

The black is from Hof Klausing's successful damline with Daiquiri K also having produced Isabell Werth's licensed stallion So Unique (by Sezuan) and Rebecca Mauleon's Grand Prix mare Havanna II (by Hotline).

Lilli and Oskar Ochsenhofer

Sanibel sold to the Ochsenhofer family in Austria made her international debut at the inaugural European Children Championships in Vidauban in 2015. Under Lilli Ochsenhofer she won individual bronze. Lilli rode two more European Championships on her: in 2016 in Oliva Nova (ESP) at junior level, finishing 32nd in the individual test and in 2017 in Roosedaal (NED), where she was 38th.

At the Austrian Championships Lilli and Sanibel won junior bronze in 2016 and junior silver in 2017. After Sanibel, Lilli competed at young riders level with Roi du Soleil but quit her international career. Her last international were the Euros in Hartpury in 2022.

Oskar took over the ride in 2018 and went to the European Children Championships in Fontainebleau, where they were 10th in the individual test. Two years later they rode at the 2020 European Junior Riders Championships in Pilisjaszfalu (HUN) and landed 14th place in the Kur to Music. In 2021 at the Euros in Oliva Nova (ESP), they were 28th in the individual test. Oskar rode his last CDI on Sanibel in May 2022 in Achleiten.

At the Austrian Championships Oskar and Sanibel won children's gold in 2018 and 2019. They were fourth in 2021.  As of 2023 Oskar has been competing at junior and young rider level with Siesta Key. 

Hannah-Katharina Dearing-Schumach

Sanibel disappeared from the international scene for 1.5 years and returned in 202' under Austrian Children rider Hannah-Katharina Dearing-Schumach, daughter of Austrian professionals Stephanie Dearing and Olympian Christian Schumach.  

Sanibel debuted with Hannah-Katharina in Gössendorf in March 2024 and after starts in Verolanueva, St. Margarethen and Brno, they represented Austria at the European Children Championships in Opglabbeekn where they finished 15th in the individual test. A year later the duo returned to the Children Euros in Le Mans and landed 7th place individually.

Retirement

At age 19 Sanibel is now retired from sport. The mare was honoured at the CDI Salzburg on 5 December.
