Austrian Olympian Victoria Max-Theurer has withdrawn from competing at next week's 2025 European Dressage Championships in Crozet (FRA).
Abegglen Withdrawn
Max-Theurer will not be fielding her 15-year old Westfalian gelding Abegglen (by Ampere x Carabas).
"Abby has not been in the top form I would have liked for us for the European Championships in recent days," said 39-year old Victoria. "Of course, we would have loved to compete, but my horse always comes first for me – and even a tempting 23rd championship appearance (incl. youth champs) doesn't change that!"
She was also nominatively entered with L'Espoir de Massa as reserve horse, but he will not replace the vacant spot.
"For Leo, who has also made it onto the shortlist despite our short partnership, the championships may be a little too early this year. I am now looking forward to the upcoming shows to gain even more experience together for a future championship appearance," said Victoria.
Max-Theurer rode Abeggelen at the 2024 Olympics, as well as at the 2021 and 2023 European Championships. She flew Abegglen to the 2021 Olympics but withdrew him with dental issues. She chose Topas for the 2022 World Championships. Topas did only one CDI in 2025 in April and was not short-listed this year for team selection.
Team of Three
Austria had selected a team of four riders for these Europeans, but only three will travel to France: Florian Bacher, Bettina Kendlbacher and Stefan Lehfellner
"Vici's withdrawal is naturally a significant blow for us and is very unfortunate for the entire team," said team captain Ursula Barth. "As painful as this decision is, it must of course be respected. Nevertheless, we have two horses that have been performing at a consistently high level for years. Then there is Bettina, who has performed reliably well this year – that makes her a real asset."
"The riders should deliver the performances they have shown in recent years and championships – no less, and preferably more," Barth concluded.
