ANCCE, the Royal National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association, reported a decrease in the amount of foals born in 2024.
ANCCE held its 52nd General Assembly in Sevilla on 27 June 2025, where it presented the new figures.
Downward Trend
While in 2023 there was still growth with 13,402 foals born, in 2024 there were 12,615 foals registered. Of those 2024 born foals there were 6,228 colts and 6,387 fillies.
The downward trend has been reported by studbooks all over Europe and goes hand in hand with the instability of the global economic market and political landscape.
Global Interest in PRE Horses
ANCCE also reported that, 2,775 new stud farms were registered, thus bringing the total census, as of December 31st, to 290,407 horses belonging to 50,188 active stud farms in 71 countries.
In 2024 there were 48,365 active stud farms in 67 countries reported.
Currently, the Purebred Spanish Horse represents 70% of all horses registered in Spain. Among the newly registered breeders, 39% are located abroad, mainly in the United States, Italy, and the Netherlands, while the remaining 61% are breeders located in Spain, with Andalusia (46%), Madrid and Catalonia leading the roster.
Healthy Organisation
ANCCE President Jose Juan Morales underscored the strength of the association, which counts on its own resources and has become consolidated as a reference among breeders, both in Spain and internationally. “ANCCE is a healthy organidation,” he stated.
Members ratified the main points on the agenda: the 2024 administration and accounts—a five million euro budget—and the agreements adopted by the Board of Directors.
