Luxembourg's Grand Prix rider Joelle Beier-Kinnen is showing good progress after suffering an aneurysm on 12 May 2020.

Kinnen was immediately operated on in a hospital in Trier, Germany, and initially kept in an artificial coma.

On 21 May the first attempt was made to wake up her up. Husband Thomas Beier wrote, "her vital signs are good and the blood circulation in her head is also good. When they tried to wake her up, she still developed some stress, which is why the doctors keep trying in small steps. During my visit today, she also showed reactions for the first time, but still uncontrolled."

Over the weekend, Kinnen improved much more and has been woken up for a short period of time.

Beier reporter that on 24 May "Joëlle was awake and showed controlled reactions. During my visit, the artificial respiration had been switched off and she breathed independently for the whole hour. She even tried to talk to me, which is unfortunately not possible because of the intubation. It is certainly very frustrating for her if I do not understand her. "

Joelle Beier-Kinnen made her international claim to fame in the 2000s aboard Petit Prince (by Prince Thatch xx x Lanthan). She represented Luxembourg at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen. Joelle is an amateur dressage rider and a school teacher by profession. She is also 2* level FEI Steward in dressage, show jumping and para dressage. She has officiated as steward at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon.
