Marten Luiten concluded his final year as a pony rider by winning the national title at the 2017 Dutch Pony Championships held in Ermelo, The Netherlands, on Saturday 26 August 2017. With an 80.375% scoring freestyle, Luiten and Movie Star bagged all major Dutch pony titles this 2017 show season: the indoor and the outdoor title as well as the KNHS Pony Cup Finals.
The 2017 Dutch Pony Championships are ridden over two rounds: the preliminary test in the morning and the freestyle final in the afternoon. The 12 highest scoring riders from the morning classes make it to the Kur to Music, which counts for the medals.
Luiten and his Dutch bred Welsh pony Movie Star (by Hagelkruis Valentijn) scored a whopping 80.375% in the freestyle for gold. Although it's his third title this year, Luiten is still thrilled with the honour.
"It went really well. In the normal test it already went the way I wanted it and in the Kur to Music I could even up the ante," said Luiten. "The audience even started clapping along in the last line. It was pure joy."
Dutch team member Brandy Bos and her Dutch Welsh pony Charming Foret (by Bodo) became the reserve champions and silver medallists with a 74.917% earning freestyle, while team mate Micky Schelstraete and her German Riding Pony Elin's Noncisdador (by Nostradamus) got bronze with 74.458%.
