The 4-year old Furstin Toto LH, the 5-year old Olexus NA, and the 6-year old  Fiadora became the winners of the 2024 French Young Horse Championships held in Fontainebleau on 8 - 11 August 2024.

Making Sense Out of the System

The French Young Horse Nationals are hosted by the Societe Hippique Française (SHF) and were held for ponies and horses. They work with a very complex system of parallel divisions: the "Cycle Classique" classes and the "Cycle Libre" classes. Entries depend on the amateur or professional licence of the rider, but some riders can compete in both divisions nonetheless.

The 3-year old division falls under the direction of France Dressage, a different organisation and their Championship format consists of three different classes: 3-year olds under saddle, 3-year olds in freedom, split up between mares & geldings and stallions bred in France (can be registered with a foreign studbook), and then there is a 3-year old criterium class, exclusively for horses bred outside of France.  To make matters even more confusing, this year the 3-year olds did not show in Fontainebleau but will have their championship next week in Le Mans.

4-YO: Furstin Toto LH

Charlotte Chalvignac Vesin captured the title in the 4-year old division aboard the Hanoverian registered Furstin Toto LH (by Furst Toto x Ampere), bred by Jean Claude Ferrand. She scored 96.00 points in the finald and got 16.5 for her conformation.

Maxime Collard and last year's 3-year old champion Kankaline de Ticop (by Danciano de Malleret x Soliman) were second with 87.40% and 16.7 points.

'We bought Furstin Toto when she was three days old from her stud farm located thirty minutes from home, when we moved to Sainte Suzanne in Mayenne. She marked the beginning of our new life," said Chalvignac after winning the title. "I have been riding her for a year. She was broken in by my riders, I am no longer young enough for this kind of exercise, especially since she was and still is really elastic! She has always been very impressive, and has always been very beautiful, even at the awkward age as a growing foal. She is truly special because of her finesse and sensitivity. To reach the arena, I took five minutes longer than with the other horses, because she analyzes everything, she is very careful, while being very powerful. We call her Madame, or The Princess, she is really a mare to be taken with a pinch of salt. I never really ride her, she's the one who gives. During the season, I felt that if I asked too much she would be rigid and worried. This week it's the first time that I really ride both tests in a competition, and she responded generously. I take great care to preserve my horses. After each competition, Furstin has almost two weeks of vacation, and I work her twice a week in general. She goes to the field a lot, besides it's she who decides how long."

5-YO: Olexus NA

Almasy with Collard on Olexus NA
French Tokyo Olympian Maxime Collard won the 5-year old division aboard  Marietta Almasy's KWPN bred Olexus NA (by Painted Black x Lord Leatherdale). The pair scored 91.80% int he finals the horse got 16.7 points for conformation.

Young Rider Mathilde Juglaret and the Hanoverian bred Secret Story Des Paluds (by Secret x Johnson) became the reserve champions with 92.00 in the Finals but 16.0 points for conformation.

"He has performed the two best tests of the season," said winner Maxime Collard. "For a week now, I have felt that he is reaching a new level, the timing is perfect. I have been training him since the end of 2022 when Marietta Almasy bought him. He has changed a lot between the ages of four and five, he has grown, gotten stronger. We had to take his development into account, he is a bit late, but once he understood what I am looking for, he is able to walk through fire for me. He is extraordinary. On the other hand, this winter, I was afraid that he would be slightly behind the five years, because it took him a while to understand how to position his body in certain movements, but in fact he is ready on time and I am delighted. He is destined to go all the way to the top level."

6-YO: Fiadora

Maxime Collard on Fiadora
Maxime Collard and the Hanoverian mare Fiadora  (by Fursten-Look x Valentino) made it a double, winning her second national title after 2022. She was reserve in 2023. Owned by the art dealership Applicat Prazan, the dark bay mare scored the winning 88.40% in the Finals.

Charlotte Chalvignac and the Hanoverian mare Desiree Majishan (by Don Index x Don Vino) was the runner-up with 85.00%.

"I am absolutely delighted with Fiadora," said Collard. "The flying changes are not yet completely established. She is understanding them and gaining confidence. Her quality for collection is fantastic, in fact she is already ready for the seven-year-old tests. The six-year-old division was  not an end in itself. We did not enter her for the qualification for the World Championship because I did not want to put pressure on her for the flying changes. For the moment, she is not intended to be sold, the objective is to take her to the Grand Prix, and that takes time. "
