
Ludovico Nava, one of the most legendary men for equestrian sport in Italy, has passed away on 5 December 2016 after a grave illness. He was 87 years old.
Nava was a key figure for Italian equestrianism during the "Golden Age of D'Inzeo." He was an Olympic eventer, a trainer, judge, breeding expert and author.
Born in Modena on 19 April 1929, Nava had a professional career in the military, first as an artillery officer but working his way up to colonel.
Aboard Captain Aldo Greco's horse Arcidosso he competed at the 1960 Olympic Games in eventing and finished 16th individually and 5th with the team. The year before he competed at the 1959 European Eventing Championships on Harroghet.
While his passion lay with eventing, Nava was highly versatile man and Italian equestrian sport relied on his expertise across the disciplines. He was one of the founding fathers, together with General Geri Honorati, of a trainer education system set up at Pratoni del Vivaro in the 1970s and established the ANIE, the National Riding Instructors Association. He held hundreds of clinics, seminars and forums across the country.
He was an official judge for eventing and dressage, served on numerous technical boards within the Italian Equestrian Federation, and was devoted to horse breeding. Nava also authored numerous books such as Equitazione Oggi (1970), Il Tuo Cavallo (1988) and Il Cavallo nel Rettangolo (1999).
