Australian international Grand Prix and Young Horse rider Briana Burgess has been invited as this year's Guest Rider for the 2020 New South Wales Young Horse Championships hosted at Australia’s prestigious Sydney CDI.

“I am excited to have been asked to be this year's guest rider at the Sydney CDI," said Briana. "It’s a great event and I look forward to being able to see and test ride Australia’s up and coming talent in the young horse ranks."

Commuting Between Europe and Australia

Burgess was shortlisted for the Australian team for the 2014 World Equestrian Games. She won the Grand Prix Special at the 2015 World Dressage Masters in Vidauban (FRA) and became a top 10 place-getter in the Nurnberger Burgpokal qualifier at the 2016 German Championships. In 2017 she was a top 10 finalist at the World Young Horse Championships and in 2018 she was long-listed for the World Equestrian Games.

In Europe she has been based with Dutch and Canadian dressage riders Johan Rockx and Penny Zavitz-Rockx, she held a working student position with Monica Theodorescu (German team trainer & Olympic medallist) for four years; and she also trained with Patrik Kittel (Swedish Olympian), Helen Langehanenberg (German Olympian), and Christoph Koschel (German WEG team member).

Burgess has recently returned from France after training with French Team rider Alexandre Ayache and Estonian Grand Prix Grete Püvi Ayache. She is back in her homeland running clinics and doing private coaching for Australian dressage riders. Briana has held training clinics in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania and more locations are scheduled for 2020.

"For the last year my focus has been on coaching in Australia," Briana explained. "During 2020 I will be spending time in both Australia and France with coaching stints in the USA.  We have some exciting developments coming up this year in terms of coaching, training and sales horses in both Australia and Europe."

Briana has been invited to the guest rider of the 2020 edition of the NSW Young Horse Championships. She will ride the top place getters of each age group in front of a panel of international judges, who will then determine the overall winner of the Championship in each age group.

The Sydney CDI Young Horse Championships format features competitions for 4, 5, 6, and 7 year old horses.  The top 10 horses from the first round with scores of 65% or more go forward to a second round.  The winner and runner up in each age group go through to the final round with Briana riding all horses and providing commentary after each ride.  Briana’s scores along with the judges' marks will determine a winner in each age group.

"As guest rider the focus will be on combinations who present themselves to a high standard in accordance to the German training scale, taking into consideration each horses individual physical and mental development," said Briana.

Briana follows up on Wendi Williamson, Melanie Schmerglatt, Anna Sophie Fiebelkorn, Andreas Schoeffner, and many more that were guest riders at the Sydney CDI.

The Sydney CDI was the first internationally recognized CDI event held in Australia with event director Toni Venhaus as the driving force behind this event. The Sydney CDI is held at the Sydney International Equestrian Center "Horsley Park" which was the venue for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
