Dutch Grand Prix rider Saskia Maertens has to take it easy for a while after she fractured her jaw in an accident while tacking her horse on Tuesday 5 March 2019.

While putting on bell boots on her Grand Prix horse Legend of Loxley, the horse lifted his knee and smacked into Saskia's jaw, fracturing it.

Maertens took to Facebook about the accident joking that her horse, which she had already nick-named "Buffalo", now has a new name: Legend of Boxley.

Her jaw was reset in the hospital and Saskia has to lay low for a few weeks, resting her jaw.

"And six weeks of no chewing, this is not really something for me," she joked.  "I still feel bruised and battered and it hurts to smile, but it's improving,"

Three days before the accident, Maertens placed seventh on her 12-year old Westfalian bred Legend of Loxely (by Lord Loxley x Darwin) at the 2019 Dutch Indoor Dressage Championships in Ermelo. Their last CDI start was in November at the 2018 CDI Munich Indoor.
