The elite Trakehner stallion Hohenstein has passed away at age 23 at his owner's station Klosterhof Medingen on Monday 11 November 2013, following a "terminal illness."

"It really is a difficult year for us," owner Theresa Wahler told Eurodressage. "We will miss our black beauty a lot."

Born in 1991 and bred by Harry Bartsch from Gottingen, Germany, Hohenstein was by Caprimond out of Helena XIV (by Matador x Grimsel). He became a premium stallion at the 1993 Trakehner Licensing in Neumunster. He finished second in the Stallion Performance Test in Adelheidsdorf with a total index of 134.05 points. He had the highest dressage index of 148.29 points, but only got 102.95 points for show jumping (28th place out of 53).

Hohenstein was a finalist in the five-year old division at the 1996 Bundeschampionate in Warendorf and continued to be trained up to Intermediaire II level. He was started at shows in 1995 by Hans Dieter Mangelsdorf and by owner Burkhard Wahler but from 1996 till 2000 the black sire was competed by Dolf Dietram Keller. Andreas Platzdasch took over in 2001 and showed the horse at small tour level for two years. Finally Portuguese Nuno Palma e Santos last competed Hohenstein in PSG-Inter I classes from 2002 til 2003. The horse did only two shows in 2003, they were the last in his competition career.

In 2002 the black sire was proclaimed Trakehner Stallion of the Year based on his successful offspring. His get was stamped by beauty and excellent rideability though they weren't the flashiest movers. Hohenstein sired 30 licensed sons and more than 100 State Premium Mares.

His most famous offspring include the late Hanoverian licensing champion His Highness and the Grand Prix dressage stallion Munchhausen. He is also sire to 2013 European Junior Riders' Champion Habitus, internationally competed licensed stallions Hohenstaufen I and II as well as Insterburg
