Doug and Louise Leatherdale's young Hanoverian licensed stallion Sir Savoy has been humanely euthanized on Monday June 27, 2005 at the equine clinic in Bargteheide, Germany.
Sir Savoy (Sandro Hit x Lanthan) suffered from ataxia and was being prepared to undergo surgery with American and German surgeons. However, the black stallion developed a temperature which threatened the operation. In agreement with Jens Meyer and Dr. Werner Jahn, it was decided to put down the horse.
"I can't tell you how heart broken we are, as well as our stallion keepers Susanne and Jens Meyers. We only hope now that the clinic will be able to study Savoy in order that it will help another horse in the same condition in the future. We have been fortunate to have wonderful breeders who have stood by us during this hard time," Louise Leatherdale told Eurodressage.
The Leatherdales, who own the renowned sire His Highness, purchased Sir Savoy at the 2004 Hanoverian Stallion Licensing. Though he had not yet completed his 30-day test, Savoy had already covered approximately 100 mares.
