2018 Australian Youth Riders Championships
Jasmine Haynes on Steendieks Champ of Glory

The 2018 Australian Youth Dressage Championships held at the Boneo Park Equestrian Centre concluded after four intense days of competition from 18 - 21 January 2018. Pony rider Jasmine Haynes, junior rider Jess Hivon, young rider Jamie Mita and Under 25 Grand Prix rider Fern Wright took out the main titles in the FEI level divisions.

Riders from New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia battled it out with leading local riders in tests ranging from Preliminary to Under 25 Grand Prix. Judges came from Queensland, Tasmania and New Zealand and supported a strong local line up, a truly international flavour.

Jan Smith, a member of the Event Organising Committee commented “we are very happy with the results of the event. In some areas, we saw a measurable improvement in the standard with the significant number of scores of 70% or over”.

The Pony Championship with its seven contestants saw a comprehensive win to 14-year old Jasmine Haynes riding the buckskin German Riding pony Steendieks Champ of Glory. Haynes, who had also scheduled to ride the junior championship on Mary Hanna's former international Grand Prix horse Umbro but then she scratched last minute, was unbeatable in all three rounds. With her 10-year old FS Chambertin x The Braes My Mobility offspring she scored  71.143% in the team test, dropped to a still winning 65.631% in the individual test and then posted 70.367% for her kur.  Aside from winning the gold and the title in the pony division, Jasmine was also the delighted winner of the Kevin Hitchins and Deb Hamid award for the most successful rider in an FEI Championship, receiving a stunning handmade silver stock pin for her efforts. The silver medal went to Caitlyn Porter on the 23 (!) year old Australian bred Marena Display (by Marena Sky Chief) , while Sophie Taylor and her part Arab Raven Lodge Aura (by Raven Lodge Born Brave x Allanooka Omar) got the bronze.

Only four combinations competed in all three rounds of the Junior Championship, which was a very close fought affair with Jess Hivon and Greenoaks Weltmann a winner on a countback from Lindsey Ware and Let’s Jazzabit. Taking over the ride on the 17-year old Australian bred Greenoaks Weltman (by Man About Town x Weltmeyer) from Lilah Nieuwland, Hivon took a slow start in the team test with a 59.748% but then tallyed 65.784% in the individual and 66.325% in the Kur for gold. The silver went to Lindsey Ware on the 16-year old Australian stockhorse Lets Jazzaround (by Jazzabout x Rodeo Rush), while Hivon also finished third on her second ride, the 15-year old Australian bred AEA Fortunato (by Flemmingh x Dutchman).

Eight pairs began the Young Rider Championship and six brought it to completion. The 16-year old Jamie Mita, who did double duty in the Under 25 division, won Young Rider gold on the 15-year old KWPN stallion Westewind (by Krack C x G Ramiro Z). In 2017 the stallion also competed at Grand Prix with owner Julia Battams but Mita took over again for the Youth Championships. The pair scored 64.363% in the team test, 68.676% in the individual and 72.683% in the Kur. Nicole Berry and the 12-year old grey Australian bred Euroz Jinks got the silver, while Tanisha Ryan and her 11-year old Quizzical got bronze.

Four pairs battled it out for the Under 25 Champion's title with Fern Wright and her 16-year old Welsh Cob Kamber Pryderi (by Burrowa Sportsmans Last x Llanarth Jack Flash) winning the Under 25 Grand Prix Championship. She scored 68.726% in the Intermediaire II,  67.094 % in the Short Grand Prix and 73.24% in the Kur.  Jamie Mita and Julia Battam's 15-year old Oldenburg Carabino (by Carabas) were second with 62.892%, 61.325% and 64.392%. Abbie O'Brien (Magnus Spero) and Claire Plenty (Adloo Richard) only contested two rounds and did not do the freestyle.
