Trakehner fans lost two great breeding stallions recently, Schampus and the Anglo Arabian Upan la Jarthe AA.
Schampus passed away during Christmas 2004 due to kidney failure. The snow white Schampus was leased to Steffen Madsen in Denmark, but was owned by Stable Krotenbach in Germany. Schampus became a premium licensed stallion at the 1987 Neumunster Trakehner Licensing and was one of only 4 licensed Karon sons (the others are EH Caprimond, Gadsby and Beaujolais). Schampus is out of the very renowned dam line of Elite Mare Suleiken (by Mahagony x Maharadscha), which also produced (Blue Hors) Silver Moon, an Intermediaire I licensed stallion who used to be ridden by Lars Petersen and sired Petersen's current Grand Prix horse Dansko's Success (Silver Moon x World Cup).
Schampus was 19-years old at the time of his death. Trakehner International reported that, "due to his unpopular color, Schampus only covered low amounts of mares, but his offspring are popular among amateurs as well as serious competitors. He leaves the approved son Tipo and several excellent performance horses, like the upper level open jumper Fatima."
The Anglo Arabian Upan la Jarthe AA (by Pancho II AA) also died recently. The dark bay stallion was discovered in France by breeder Otto Langels and he brought him as a yearling to Germany. Upan was licensed with several studbooks in Germany and produced one of the best jumper index scores for the Trakehner and Westfalian Verband. He sired two licensed sons, Kadre Noir and Stradivari.
Upan la Jarthe AA was put down at the Westfalian State Stud in Warendorf. "He was put down by his last owner, the Westfalen State Stud in Warendorf, Germany, due to a lack of breedings," Trakehners International said, "a common practice at German State Studs when old stallion don't produce enough income anymore."
