Diamantenglanz was the most popular breeding stallion for Westfalian breeders in 2023. He topped the ranking with a gigantic lead over the second most used stallion.

The Westfalian breed society released the foal and covering statistics in its March 2024 issue of Reiter + Pferde

Diamantanglanz

The 5-year old Oldenburg bred Diamantenglanz (by Diamond First x Bon Coeur x For Compliment), bred by Wieghaus-Vorwerk, has been the most used stallion for Westfalian breeders in 2023. He covered 233 mares.

Diamantenglanz was licensed at the 2021 Oldenburg Stallion Licensing and stands at the Warendorf state stud. In April 2023 he scored 8.61 points in the stallion sport test and was the second best scoring horse in the lot. He did his first competition in his career in June 2023 under Manuel Springhetti. In August 2023 Warendorf reported that Diamantenglanz was successfully operated on for colic.

The popularity might also be attributed to the fact that this young stallion is also offered at stud for a much better price (900 euro) than most young stallions who are unproven and whose stud fee is already round 1500 euro.

Top 10

Following far in the distance when it comes to coverings for Westfalian breeders is Escaneno (by Escamillo x Veneno), with 88 mares covered. The stallion, who lost his licence due to a positive medication test, went on to be re-licenced and was the high scorer of the 2024 stallion sport test.

Number three in the ranking is Glamdale WP (by Glamourdale x Millennium) who covered 81 mares of Westfalian breeders.

The highest ranked show jumping stallion is Westfalia's stalwart, the Belgian warmblood sire Cornet Obolensky (by Clinton). He ranks fourth with 79 mares covered, followed by Comme Il Faut with 71 mares covered.

Drop in Breedings

A very important trend to notice is that in 2023 a big drop in breedings have taken place. In 2023 the Westfalian breed society recorded a total of 3902 riding horse coverings, which is 11,9% less than in 2022 when 4428 mares were covered. The biggest drop is with Haflinger horses (-35,6%). A drop of 15,2% took place in sport pony breeding.

Westfalia has 6209 riding horse broodmares registered in 2023.

In 2023 the Westfalian society registered 4117 foals (sport horses) and 646 pony foals. The most used sport pony sire in 2023 is Gold Garant with 54 mares covered, followed by Neverland with 50 mares and Golden Grey with 45 mares.
