2018 Finnish Dressage Championships

Pony rider Pinja Salmela, children rider Tuisku Lamberg, junior rider Louise Jonsson, young rider Janni Martikainen, and Grand Prix rider Stella Hagelstam became the winners and titleists at the 2018 Finnish Dressage Championships held in Jarvenpaa, Finland, on 24 - 26 August 2018.

Pony rider Pinja Salmela steered the 12-year old stallion Reitland's Du Nur Du B (by Diamond x Don Pedro) to the national pony title with a combined score of 142.757 points. She topped the board in a field of 32 combinations. The pair won both rounds with 69.462% and 73.295%. Jenni Silventoinen and the 16-year old Dutch bred Hazelberg's Macho finished on the silver step of the podium with 140.499 points. They earned 69.359% and 71.140%. Anni Plith and the 17-year old Finnish bred Pin Rock's Hannibal (by Speyksbosch Natural x Laeruds Benson) earned bronze with 138.437 points (67.692% and 70.745%).

Tuisku Lamberg became the 2018 Finnish Children's Champion on the 9-year old Danish warmblood gelding Netstutteriet's Bachio (by Don Schufro x Come Back II). The pair posted 70.033% and 70.563% on the board for gold. Elina Kemppainen and the 15-year old gelding Luce del Fuocco (by De Niro x Thunder Boy) stayed far behind them but got silver with 64.700% and 63.531%. She has bronze medal winner Senni Tolonen on the 10-year old Hanoverian gelding Royal Dandy (by Royal Blend x De Niro) right on her heels. Tolonen got 65.367% and 62.000%.

Junior rider Louise Jonsson climbed to the highest step on the podium in the junior riders' category which featured 12 combinations. After a long period of injury, Louise's horse Dayna, an 8-year old Hanoverian gelding by Dancier x Prince Thatch xx, peaked at the Nationals and earned her rider gold. The combination scored 66.649% and 71.995%. Johanna Simila and her 9-year old gelding Mein Freund (by Falsterbo x Mazaad xx) got silver with 66.568% and 68.055%, while Eerika Hakala and the 10-year old Holsteiner mare American Beauty (by Aljano x Lancetto) finished with bronze after posting 66.243% and 67.333%.

In the young riders division Janni Martikainen was the undefeated winner. Aboard the 16-year old Belgian warmblood Cornando van de Cadzandhoeve (by Carnando x Lys de Darmen) she scored 69.026% in the first round and 74.80% in the Kur to Music. Martikainen is in her last year as a young rider. At the event she got coached by Marko Bjors as she has no steady trainer at the moment. The silver went to Janka Pursiainen, who is a hair dresser by profession. Aboard the 13-year old Hanoverian gelding Hiero (by Hochadel x Aalborg) she got 67.553% and 70.845%. The Young Riders Champion of 2016 and 2017, Ella Paloheimo and her 15-year old Hanoverian gelding Wolle Wolkenstein (by Wolkenstein II x Buenos Aires), got bronze with 66.632% and 69.730%.

At Grand Prix level Stella Hagelstam and her long-time partner New Hill Julitrea, a 13-year old Finnish warmblood mare by Revan x Alcatraz , were unbeatable and won the Grand Prix with 68.740% and the Kur to Music with 75.885%. With a combined result of 144.625%, Hagelstam grabbed the title. The silver went to Elisabet Ehrnrooth on her 16-year old Swedish bred Wizard (by Wetano x Allegretto). Trained by Janne Bergh, Ehrnrooth posted 66.440% in the Grand Prix and 73.230% in the Kur to total 139.670 points. Maria Pyykonen and the 14-year old Dutch warmblood Zelle (by Ferro x Samber) snatched the bronze with 134.245 points. This duo got 66.606% in the Grand Prix and 68.185% for their freestyle.

"She really is something special," said winner Hagelstam of her champion mare. "I had a ridiculous (last) day at the Finnish Championships: my personal record and most likely the highest Grand Prix level score ever in Finland. It was a super test rewarded with 75.885% and a completely new feeling inside the ring. What else could I have wished for. I'm really happy to see how much attention and interest our little sport #dressage has got the past days. I still can’t believe the amount of spectators at the Championships. It really was a pleasure
