The Westfalian Escolar and the Oldenburg Follow Me became the leaders of the 2017 German Breeding Value Index, which was released by the breeding department of the German Equestrian federation at the beginning of December.

The Breeding Value index is created based on the stallion's own performances, as well as the achievements of the offspring.

"The goal of the breeding value index is to estimate the hereditary performance value of a stallion and give the breeders the necessary tools to select a stallion," it read on the German Equestrian Federation website.

Two stallions scored the same amount of index points, 169, to put them at the top of the leader board: the 8-year old Westfalian stallion Escolar (by Estobar x Furst Piccolo) who is currently competing at small tour level under Hubertus Schmidt, and the 7-year old Oldenburg stallion Follow Me (by Furstenball x Donnerschwee), who has only been very lightly competed by Therese Nilshagen. He did not show between June 2015 and January 2017.

If the stallions were ranked solely on competition results from the offspring, the Hanoverian stallion Breitling W (by Bismarck) would be topping the board with 169 index points and a reliability of 85%, followed by Don Schufro (by Donnerhall) with 164 index points (93% reliability) and Jazz (by Cocktail) with 164 index points (87% reliability).

The top 10 for dressage sires in 2017 includes:

  • Escolar (WESTF by Estobar x Fürst Piccolo): breeding index 169 - reliability 82%
  • Follow Me (OLDB by Fürstenball x Donnerschwee): breeding index 169 - reliability 75%
