A very special and unique feat took place at the 2017 CDI-W Burbank in California on 10 - 12 March 2017: Grand Prix mare Breanna and her son, small tour horse Quincy, swept all FEI level classes at one international dressage competition. The 2017 CDI-W Burbank was the final American based World Cup qualifier before the 2017 World Cup Finals in Omaha.
Kathleen Raine and her 17-year old Hanoverian mare Breanna (by Brentano II x Weltmeyer) scored a winning 70.440% in the Grand Prix and 73.425% in the Kur to Music, twice edging out American Charlotte Jorst on the Dutch warmblood stallion Nintendo. Jorst ended her extensive Florida show campaign in Wellington and returned back to the West Coast to continue further competition. Jorst placed second twice with 69.840% and 72.725%.
Breanna was acquired by Raine, her husband David Wightman and long-time friend Jennifer Mason at the 2004 Hanoverian Winter Auction in Verden. She was originally named Brentana, but to avoid any mix-up with Debbie McDonald's Brentina at the time, they renamed the bay mare as Breanna.
Breanna is a 2000 born mare and in 2006 the American owners' trio decided to breed some embryotransfer foals out of her; one by Quaterback, one by Festrausch and another one by Rousseau. In 2007 the filly Roulette (by Rousseau) was born and in 2008 the colt Quincy and filly Finesse followed. All are registered with the Oldenburg society. The dark bay Finesse was trained by Raine until the mare was 5 and then sold to Lisa Bradley. Nicholia Clarke bought the chestnut mare Roulette in 2012 and trained her to PSG level. In 2016 the mare produced a foal by Negro, which is in Germany.
Quincy, on the other hand, is still very active in the show ring as an up and coming FEI dressage horse. Owned by Jennifer Mason, the bay gelding is trained by Nicholia "Niki" Clarke and the duo had a dream CDI show debut in Burbank. They won the Prix St Georges with 70.605% and the Intermediaire I with 71.368%. Mom Breanna and son Quincy certainly proved their mettle.
"I think this was a big moment in American dressage history," David Wightman told Eurodressage. "Quincy did a very steady test in the Prix St Georges, then really went for it in the Intermediare 1. He had a lot of impulsion with an elastic trot. His flying changes were straight and uphill. Breanna had a solid test in Grand Prix, showing she is fit and still is improving in her piaffe and passage. Her freestyle was fun to watch as the music really fit. The horse was relaxed and had a lot of impusion. You can see Quincy is Breanna's son and just maybe he will follow in her hoof steps!"
