FEI Confirms Rio Olympic Group Winners, One Top Six Slot Still Unallocated

The FEI today announced and confirmed the Group winners which opened a Rio Olympic slot for their national federation. One slot in the top 6 of the final individual slots is still to be confirmed following an investigation into the controversial scoring at the 2016 CDI Lier last weekend.

In a document released on 6 March 2016, the FEI announced the "list of qualified nations, according to the Qualification procedures of each discipline - FEI Regulations for Equestrian Events at the Olympic Games, 24th Edition, effective for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games."

The Dressage Teams – Qualification System entails that 10 NOCs will obtain “direct” qualification; 9 team quota places will be allocated through team championships or a special qualification event and one 1 as a Host Nation place, as per the table below. A team consists of minimum 3 athletes/horses and maximum of 4 athletes/horses.

Dressage Teams – Qualification System

  • Host Nation Brazil

  • The 3 best ranked teams at the 2014 World Equestrian Games excluding the team qualified above
    2. GER
    3. GBR
    4. NED
  • The 3 best ranked teams from the 2015 European Championship from Olympic Groups A, B and/or C excluding Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and teams qualified above
    5. ESP
    6. SWE
    7. FRA
  • The best ranked team from FEI Olympic Groups D or E of the 2015 Pan-American Games, excluding the teams qualified above
    8. USA
  • Only if  Olympic Groups F and/or G have not qualified a team at the 2014 World Equestrian Games, the best ranked team from Olympic Group F or G at the 2014  World Equestrian Games is directly qualified.
    If  Olympic Groups F and/or G have already qualified a team at the 2014 World Equestrian Games, this team quota place will be added to the 2014 World Equestrian Gamesso that the 4 best ranked teams from the 2014 World Equestrian Games are directly qualified.
    9. AUS
  • The best ranked team from:
    FEI Olympic Group F or FEI Olympic Group G or
    FEI Olympic Group C countries Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan
    at the FEI approved special qualification event, excluding the teams qualified above.
    10. JPN
  • TOTAL = 40 ATHLETES - 10 TEAMS

One "composite" team has qualified for the Olympics. “Composite” qualified teams are teams are made up of minimum 3 to maximum 4 individuals qualified from the same NOC from the FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking - Dressage to make up a team.

Dressage Individuals – Qualification System

Only NOCs which have not obtained “direct” team qualification are eligible to qualify for individual quota places. Each athlete can qualify a maximum of one (1) quota place for his/her NOC.

  • FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking – Dressage (allocation through FEI Olympic Groups)
    The point system, including the list of events, to be used for establishing the FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking – Dressage, will be published by 1 January 2015 and distributed to NOCs/NFs.
    The FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking – Dressage is limited to the best 4 results per athlete/horse combination in these events, within the period from 9 March 2015 to 6 March 2016 included.

    For FEI Olympic Groups A, B, C (6 quota places):
    -    The NOCs of the athletes placed first and second in each of the Groups A, B and C on the FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking
    – Dressage (by group) will each obtain 1 individual quota place.
    Group A: 2 DEN (Composite team)
    Group B: 1 AUT, 1 BEL
    Group C: 2 RUS



    For FEI Olympic Groups D, E (4 quota places):
    -    The NOCs of the athletes placed first in each Group D and E on the FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking – Dressage (by group) will each obtain 1 individual quota place.
    Group D: 1 CAN
    Group E: 1 DOM

    -    The NOCs of the highest ranked athletes in each of the Groups D and E in the Grand Prix at the 2015 Pan-American Games will each obtain one 1 individual quota place..
    Group D: 1 CAN
    Group E: 1 MEX


    For FEI Olympic Groups F, G (4 quota places):
    -    The NOCs of the athletes placed first in each Group F and G on the FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking – Dressage (by group) will each obtain 1 individual quota place..
    -    The NOCs of the highest ranked athletes in each of the Groups F and G at the Grand Prix at the FEI approved special qualification event will obtain each 1 individual quota place
    Group F: 1 PLE
    Group G: 1 NZL
    Group F: 1 RSA
    Group G: 1 KOR
  • FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking – Dressage (allocation through overall ranking)
    6 quota places will be allocated to the NOCs of the best ranked athletes in the FEI Olympic Ranking Athletes - Dressage. The ranking will not include:
    -    the athletes from NOCs which have qualified a team
    -    the athletes that qualified an individual quota place for their FEI Olympic Group at the 2015 Pan-American Games
    Individual Championships or the special qualification event
    -    the athletes that qualified an individual quota place for their FEI Olympic Group through the FEI Olympic Athletes Ranking
    – Dressage (allocation through FEI Olympic Groups) An NOC may qualify a maximum of 4 athletes/horses.
