In 2015, the ANCCE Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book registered eleven thousand new PRE horses and granted 2500 new codes to breeders located in such countries as Bahrain, Estonia, Lithuania, Jordan, Brazil, etc.. Of all registered breeders, 7000 are internationals (up 28% over 2014), most of whom are located in the USA and Mexico.
Of the thirty thousand breeders in Spain, the ranking is led by Andalusia, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha. All in all, there are more than thirty thousand active Purebred Spanish Horse breeders throughout the world.
Throughout the past year, the number of births registered in the PRE Stud Book has increased 8%, which translates into eleven thousand foals registered as of December 31st. This increase of the total herd numbers surpasses 220,000 PRE Horses. Regarding the rest of the services offered by the PRE Stud Book office, more than 5000 Basic Revisions for Breeding Stock were carried out, and some 9000 horses changed owners.
It is important to note that PRE Stud Book representatives took 27 international trips in 2015 for the Revisions in countries such as Russia, Greece and Peru. This fact underlines the promotional activities carried out in recent years to make the breed know the world over. Likewise, Stud Book representatives participated in trade shows, conventions and offers training courses for breeders and general horse enthusiasts. They also met with national and international associations working with the Stud Book to review and update their knowledge of the most recent PRE Stud Book procedures.
PRE Stud Book executives attended a meeting with Copa-Cocega (EU committee of professional agricultural organizations) and the European Parliament to discuss, among other topics, a major aspect affecting the breed, which is the fact that horse sales must pay 21% VAT. It is the only livestock breed with such a high tax burden. Likewise, in October, Stud Book professionals attended the annual meeting of the World Breeding Federation of Sport Horses in Vienna, an event that brought together more than 100 representatives of breed associations handling the various equine stud books, in addition to members of the International Equestrian Federation and other related organizations. For ANCCE, it was a new opportunity to show PRE Breeding Program work and objectives, and the PRE Stud Book, while at the same time promoting the Purebred Spanish Horse as an excellent breed as a sport horse.
Finally, the genetic information of 59,109 PRE horses was published on Internet—both on the ANCCE and PRE Stud Book web sites—which was a 76% increase over 2014 statistics. All of this information is available to breeders free of charge. It is a useful tool to aid in disseminating the genetic improvements of the PRE and increasing the genetic progress of future generations, especially in the light of the current economic situation where productivity and competition guarantee stud farm feasibility.
