Emmelie Scholtens' talented young Dutch warmblood Estoril has passed away. The chestnut KWPN stallion had to be euthanized following complications from a bacterial infection on Friday night 6 November 2015.

The 6-year old Zhivago x Gribaldi offspring initially began struggling with signs of colic and was transported to the equine clinic of Utrecht. Veterinarians could not find a cause there and the horse briefly returned home to be soon transported to Tom Mariën's equine clinic in Belgium where the stallion was diagnosed with a severe bacterial infection of the small intestine. He was operated on but could not be saved.

Under Emmelie Scholtens Estoril finished third in the 2014 Pavo Cup Finals. He finished 11th at the 2014 World Young Horse Championships and fifth at the 2015 World Championships.

"The best was yet to come," Scholtens said after losing the horse, "because he was so talented. I'm glad to have achieved beautiful things with him."

Estoril was owned by Joop van Uytert in partnership with Platinum Stable and bred by Rene Franssen, who was named KWPN Breeder of the Year in 2015.
