The KWPN Stallion Licensing committee was very strict on the third pre-selection day of dressage colts for the 2014 KWPN Stallion Licensing. Of the 56 colts presented on Friday 13 December 2013, only twelve were allowed to move on to the second phase.
"It wasn't the nicest assessment day," said licensing committee member Wom Ermes. "This morning several stallions had remarks on their conformation, like small or uneven feet, a hollow front leg, weak fetlocks or incorrect front feet. Furthermore there were some stallions which were too fresh in the ad lib presentation. We had to cancel the presentation of four of them. After the handlers had lunged the colts, they could return, but often they remained tense."
Despite these issues, some colts did stand out with good models, correct confirmation and good movement. Guardiola (by Bodyguard x Trento B) impressed with his nice model and canter. Gladstone (by Andretti x Krack C) excelled in trot, canter, and self-carriage. Galaxy Win T (by Apache x Jazz) was slightly tense but left a good impression.
Today the Apache offspring appeared in Ermelo. No less than 29 were registered for the first phase, 23 were presented and only five passed. Three of the four colts that were excused from the ring for "fresh" behaviour, were sired by Apache. Equally underwhelmed was the Ampere offspring. Even though 10 Ampere colts were presented, just two made the cut.
The licensing committee is less strict in the first round on pedigree. This means that genetically less interesting stallions are still considered despite their uninteresting bloodlines, whereas less moving stallions could move on to the second round in they have interesting blood.
Galaxie Win T was one of the rambunctious colts that had to be lunged but he was still tense in the freedom phase. "Despite the extra lunging he remained too fresh and tense," said Ernes. "But we like to see him again in Den Bosch."
