In March 2011 Dutch stallion station Broere commissioned the French laboratory Cryozootech to create a clone of their top stallion Jazz (by Cocktail x Ulster x Amor). The station now confirms that two healthy clones have been born in the United States.
Eric Palmer, ceo of Cryozootech, reported that the two chestnut colts were born two months ago. The foals will both move to Broere Stud in The Netherlands later on.
"We are delighted that we have been able to use this possibility," said the owner of Jazz in a statement. "Jazz, which has proven to be so valuable for sport and breeding, has been secured in this special way. In the future these clones could be used as breeding stallion. In that way the valuable heritage of Jazz will be preserved."
So far breeding society Zangersheide has been the biggest studbook to allow cloned stallions to stand at stud.
On 18 June the FEI announced that clones would be allowed in sport. In their press release, the FEI said that "the latest research on the issue of equine cloning was presented and debated at the FEI Sports Forum. The FEI Bureau accepted that the position of the FEI on equine clones and their progeny should be changed to “The FEI will not forbid participation of clones or their progenies in FEI competitions. The FEI will continue to monitor further research, especially with regard to equine welfare.”
Cryzootech replied to this FEI rule change is "the result of 10 years of smooth information and lobbying!"
