FEI Dressage News

The FEI Dressage Task Force (DTF) held a conference call on the 8th April to discuss the outcome of the FEI Bureau meeting held on the 31st March 2008.

Regarding the proposals for the Olympic Games Format and the FEI Dressage Committee Structure, the members of the DTF were disappointed that the FEI Bureau felt unable to accept the proposals as presented. Although the Olympic Format proposal was well received, it was the view of the FEI Bureau that they were not prepared to present this to the IOC in time for their April deadline until all the tasks of the DTF were complete. The DTF’s review of the judging system was considered a priority by the FEI Bureau. Further, the FEI Bureau requested that the DTF discuss the composition of the future Dressage Committee together with the FEI Nominations Committee.

Subsequently, the DTF have reviewed their working procedure to ensure they are made aware of conditions or restraints that may affect future proposals. The DTF remain determined to seek open and transparent consultation with all stakeholder groups, NF’s, and the dressage community at large.

The DTF will now take the following action:

Following discussions with the FEI Nominations Committee, the DTF will re-present a modified proposal for the Dressage Committee composition to the FEI Bureau by the end of April. This timeframe will allow for nominations to be received from NFs and Stakeholder Groups and for appointments to be ratified during the FEI General Assembly in November 2009.

The next DTF meeting will be held in Lausanne on 21st and 22nd April, 2009. The agenda will focus on tasks 1 and 2 of the DTF brief as listed below;

  1. Review the issues surrounding the very significant area of the training and development of, assessment and selection of judges for major championships and Olympic Games; review as part of this development of randomized/computerized judge selection process.

  2. The fitness for purpose of the method of judging dressage competitions needs thorough review – both in terms of the number of judges, their positioning and the judging process;

During this meeting the DTF will be meet with representatives from other sports to scrutinize and compare their systems of judging.

A summary report will be publicized following this meeting.

The role of DTF remains that of an advisory body to assist FEI HQ on the tasks as specified in its original brief and also on other matters that may be presented by the FEI from time to time.

The DTF are requested to report their recommendations and findings to the FEI Bureau during the General Assembly in November 2009.
