Dana van Lierop has won the second qualifier in the 2009 Imperial Riding Cup held in Emmeloord, The Netherlands, on January 18, 2009.
Aboard her 8-year old Equestricon's Lord Champion (by Le Champion), van Lierop scored an impressive 71,53% and beat a huge field of competition.
The 13-year old Dana presented her pony with much elegance. He was light in the hand and attentive to the aids. Dana is trained by her mother Nicolette van Lierop, who rode KWPN breeding stallion Rousseau to the 2002 Pavo Cup title and the reserve champion's title at the 2003 World Young Horse Championships.
Amsterdam based Maria van den Dungen finished second in the Emmeloord Imperial Riding Cup qualifier. Aboard the 7-year old licensed pony stallion Rembrandt (by Renoir), she got 69,58% from the judges and stayed ahead of Klinte de Rijck on Omira (by Nobel) who landed a third place with 69,31%. Dutch Pony tema member Anne Meulendijks slotted in fourth with her bay gelding Boticelli on 67,78%.
The award ceremony in Emmeloord was quite a spectacle with rambunctious stallions giving many young children a hard time by being rebellious, spooky and out of control. They disturbed the entire field and it took a while before all kids had the focus of their ponies back.
Dutch pony chef d'equipe Christa Laarakkers was very pleased with the performances of the pony riders. "It is remarkable to see so many good combinations at this moment. There are at least 10 pairs who can ride good A-team scores. There is very good for the wide basis in our pony sport."
The Imperial Riding Cup is a special show circuit in The Netherlands for FEI Pony riders. There are six selection trials and the top 12 ranked riders can participate in the finals in Almelo in August 2009. The trials also count as qualifiers for the Dutch pony team.
