Martin Schaudt's 1996 Olympic mount Durgo has passed away. The Westfalian gelding by Degen x Grunhorn III had been suffering much from the summer heat and his general condition deteriorated gradually.
According to the veterinarians, it was no longer possible for Durgo to have a pain-free retirement. In the horse's best interest, owners Martin Schaudt and Berthold Maute decided to have Durgo humanely put down.
Schaudt and Durgo had a very successful show career together in the nineties. In 1994 they became Baden Wurttemberger Regional Champion and they were German National Dressage Champion in 1994 and 1997. They won team gold at the 1995 European Dressage Championships and team gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Durgo ended his show career in 1997.
As a combination, they achieved 43 victories at S-level and placed at 122 S-competitions. 28 of these were victories in Grand Prix and Intermediaire II level tests. Durgo passed away at age 22.
