The 2003 European Pony Championships at Necarne Castle in Irvinestown, Ireland, kicked off yesterday with the vet inspection for the dressage ponies. Thirty-six ponies were presented to the judges for inspection and all of them passed.
Obviously absent from the vet inspection and the competition is the Belgian pony team. According to Belgian pony chef d'equipe Laurence van Doorslaer, only Belgian rider was able to ride the qualifying scores and that was Hanne de Wit with her German bred Derengo. "Unfortunately, Derengo sustained an injury at the CDI-P Strassen and the pony had to stay home," Van Doorslaer said. "Hanna is very disappointed of course. We all hope that the pony will recover quickly so that they can still compete at the Belgian Championships in October."
