During a meeting of the FEI Medication sub-Committee in November 2002, recent positive test results for herbal medications including valerian were discussed. The committee is to issue warnings to riders on the use of herbal products containing valerian.

An explanatory brochure on testing issues will be included in all FEI passports at short notice. The brochure explains the procedure of testing in a user-friendly way and give recommendations to riders with regard to stable management and treatment of competition horses. At the WEG a total of 54 horses were tested, with only one testing positive for valerian.

Valerian is also used for humans. Valerian Root helps reduce excessive anxiety, restlessness and facilitates natural sleep. In medieval Europe it was called "all-heal" and it's potency was considered unsurpassed. Modern studies have identified in Valerian root at least three groups of ingredients with potentially beneficial effect on nervous system. Passion flower, at one time was among major export items from America to Europe due to its recognized anxiolytic and stress-relieving action. Lemon Balm and Marjoram help promote calming effects and facilitate natural sleep.
